The weakness is that it does not like weed, rock, or soft ooze, and after a 180 degree wind shift it can trip out and skate across the bottom without resetting because the flukes have to dig in all over again. Light, flat, cheap, superb in the right bottom.
Plow anchors (CQR and Delta style). The CQR, with its hinged plow point, and the fixed Delta were the cruising standard for decades. They set reasonably in a wide range of bottoms and swim through a wind shift instead of tripping out, which is a real virtue for overnight anchoring. The hinged CQR can be fiddly to set and will sometimes lie on its side before it bites. Delta types are simpler. Both need a fair bit of weight to perform, and newer designs generally out-hold them pound for pound.

Claw anchors (Bruce style). The one-piece claw, originally designed to hold oil rigs, sets easily in a lot of bottoms and handles wind shifts gracefully because it has no moving parts and roughly the same shape from every angle. It is forgiving and a genuine set-and-forget hook. The catch is that it holds less for its weight than a fluke or a modern scoop, so you carry more metal for the same grip. Still a solid, hassle-free choice, especially over grass and rock where flukes struggle.
Mushroom anchors. The rounded mushroom is a mooring anchor, not a working anchor. Its holding comes from burying itself in soft mud over time and from sheer weight, so a small one is fine for a dinghy or a fishing sit in calm mud but useless as a boat's primary hook. You will see big mushrooms as permanent moorings. Do not rely on a light one to hold a cruising boat in a blow.

The rode has two jobs: it transmits load to the anchor, and it keeps the pull on the anchor as close to horizontal as possible so the anchor stays buried instead of being levered up out of the bottom. Weight and catenary, the sag in the line, are what create that low pulling angle.
All chain. A full chain rode is the cruiser's standard for good reasons. Chain is heavy, so it hangs in a deep curve and keeps the pull horizontal at the anchor even in a strong gust. It does not chafe on coral, rock, or shell the way rope does. And its weight alone acts as a shock absorber and adds holding. The downsides are real: chain is heavy on the bow, which affects trim, and in a hard blow the catenary straightens out and the chain becomes a solid link with no give, which is why an all chain rode needs a snubber. You also almost certainly want a windlass to haul it.
Rope and chain (combination rode). A length of chain at the anchor, spliced to three-strand nylon for the rest, is the standard on smaller boats and as a second rode. The chain, usually a boat length or so, keeps the pull horizontal at the anchor and takes the seabed chafe, while the nylon is light, cheap, and stretchy, which gives you natural shock absorption in a chop. The trade-offs are chafe where the nylon crosses rock or the bow roller, and less catenary, so you generally pay out more scope with a combination rode than with all chain.
How much rode should you carry aboard? Enough to anchor at proper scope in the deepest water you realistically expect, plus your bow height, plus a reserve. A common cruising standard is to carry at least 200 to 300 feet total so you can lie at 7:1 in 30 feet of water and still have chain in reserve. Size the chain and rope to the boat, not to what fits the locker. As a rough guide, a 25 to 30 foot boat runs 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch chain and about 1/2 inch nylon, a 35 to 40 foot boat runs 5/16 inch or 3/8 inch chain and 5/8 inch nylon, and larger cruisers step up from there. When in doubt, match the chain to your windlass gypsy and the anchor to the boat's displacement and windage, not just its length. A high-windage catamaran or trawler needs more anchor than a sleek monohull of the same length.
Scope is the single most misunderstood part of anchoring, and getting it right fixes more dragging problems than any anchor upgrade. Scope is the ratio of rode length paid out to the vertical distance from your bow roller to the seabed. That vertical distance is the water depth plus the height of your bow above the water, and people forget the bow height all the time. If the depth is 20 feet and your bow roller is 4 feet up, your working depth is 24 feet, not 20.
The classic guideline is 7:1. For every foot of depth-plus-bow-height, let out seven feet of rode. In 24 feet of working depth that is 168 feet of rode. Why so much? Because scope controls the angle of pull at the anchor. At 7:1 the pull comes in nearly horizontal and the anchor stays buried. At 3:1 the pull angle is steep and any load tends to lift the anchor's nose and break it out. More scope equals more holding, up to a point, and it also means the catenary can absorb gusts before the load ever reaches the anchor.
Adjust the ratio to conditions. In a calm anchorage with light wind and settled weather, 5:1 is often plenty and lets you swing in a smaller circle. When wind is forecast, or you are staying overnight and the weather could change, go to 7:1 or more. In a real blow, 10:1 is not excessive if you have the swing room and the rode. All chain lets you get away with slightly less scope than rope because the chain's weight does part of the job, but do not treat that as license to short-scope in a gale. When holding is marginal, the cheapest fix is almost always more rode.

Bottom. Check the chart for the seabed type. Sand and firm mud are what you want. Grass and weed can be hit or miss because your anchor may set on the surface of the weed and drag when the load comes on. Rock and coral hold poorly and can foul your anchor. If the chart says weed and your anchor will not bite on the first try, move rather than fight it.
Depth and tide. Check the depth at the state of tide you are in, then work out what it will be at low water and at high water. You need enough water under the keel at dead low to stay afloat, and you need to keep your scope sensible at high water when the depth increases. A spot that is perfect at high tide can leave you aground at 3 a.m. Anchor for the extremes, not the moment.
Swing room. Once anchored, your boat will pivot around the anchor as wind and current change, tracing a circle whose radius is roughly your rode length plus your boat length. Everything inside that circle is a potential collision: other anchored boats, moorings, shoals, the shore. Picture the full circle before you drop, and remember that boats on all chain swing differently from boats on rope, and shallow-draft boats swing differently from deep ones, so you and your neighbour may not move in sync. Give yourself margin. The boat that anchors last is responsible for staying clear of those already set.
Shelter and forecast. Look at where the wind is coming from tonight and tomorrow, not just now. A cove that is snug in a westerly becomes a dangerous lee shore if the wind clocks to the east overnight. Read the forecast before you settle in. Here is the sequence that works every time. Do it the same way in the same order and it becomes automatic. It helps to brief your crew first, because hand signals beat shouting over an engine and a windlass.
1. Approach into the wind or current. Motor slowly up to your chosen drop point heading into whatever is stronger, wind or current. This is usually the wind, but in a river or a strong tidal stream the current wins. Approaching into it means the boat naturally falls back and lays the rode out straight when you stop, and it keeps you under control at slow speed. Come to a stop over the spot where you want the anchor to sit on the bottom.
2. Lower, do not throw. With the boat stopped or just barely making sternway, lower the anchor under control until it touches bottom. Never heave the anchor overboard in a heap, because the chain piles on top of it and fouls the flukes. Lower it, feel it hit, then start paying out rode as the boat drifts back.
3. Pay out rode as you drift back. Let the wind or your engine in slow reverse walk the boat astern while you feed out rode, laying it along the bottom in a straight line rather than dumping it in a pile. Pay out to roughly the scope you want, counting your rode marks as they go.
4. Snub and let it bite. Once you have your scope out, cleat off or snub the rode and let the boat's weight come gently onto the anchor. Pause here. Give the anchor a moment to nose into the bottom before you load it up.
5. Back down to set. With the rode snubbed, put the engine in reverse and gradually increase throttle to build a real pull, working up to something like half or two thirds of cruising rpm. Watch a fixed object ashore, a tree or a building, and a point straight down the rode. If the anchor is set, the boat will stop and the rode will go bar-tight and thrum, and your shore transit will hold steady. If the boat keeps sliding backward and the shore keeps moving, the anchor is dragging. Haul up and start over rather than hoping it will catch.
6. Add a snubber or bridle. On an all chain rode, once set, rig a nylon snubber from the chain to a bow cleat and ease chain until the snubber takes the load. The stretchy nylon absorbs the shock loads that chain cannot, protects the windlass from taking strain, and quiets the boat. On a rope and chain rode the nylon already does this, but a chafe guard where it crosses the bow roller is still worth rigging for an overnight stay.
That whole sequence takes a few minutes and is worth doing properly every single time, even for a lunch stop. The habit is what keeps you safe when it matters.

The first check happens right after you back down: take a couple of bearings or transits. Line up two fixed objects ashore, or note your position relative to a landmark and a distant point behind it. If those transits stay lined up while you sit at anchor, you are not moving. If they slowly separate, you are dragging.
Modern electronics make this easier. Drop a waypoint at your anchor position, or use your chartplotter or phone's anchor alarm to record where you set. The plotter then shows your track as the boat swings, and you should see a neat arc or circle centred on the anchor. A track that walks steadily downwind in a straight line is a dragging anchor, and it is one of the most useful things a plotter will ever show you.
Physical signs matter too. Put a hand or a bare foot on the rode after you set. A well-set anchor transmits a steady tension, and if it is dragging you can often feel it juddering and jumping over the bottom. Look at your position relative to nearby boats over ten or fifteen minutes. If you are steadily gaining on the boat behind you, something is moving, and it may be you. Trust the checks, not your hope.
Calm conditions forgive a lot. Wind, current, and crowds do not, so each deserves its own approach.
In strong wind, the load on your ground tackle climbs fast, because wind load rises with the square of wind speed. A doubling of wind speed roughly quadruples the pull. Respond with more scope, a heavier or larger anchor if you can deploy one, and a longer snubber to soak up the gusts. Set the anchor harder by backing down at higher rpm so you know it will hold when the squall hits, not just in the lull. If a serious blow is forecast, consider a second anchor or moving to more sheltered water while you still can.
In current, especially tidal current, the boat lies to the stream rather than the wind, and the two can oppose each other. When wind and current fight, the boat may lie beam-on and sail around erratically, and the load direction on the anchor keeps changing. This is exactly the situation where an anchor that resets well, a scoop or a claw, earns its price, because the pull will reverse as the tide turns. Watch for the moment of slack water when the boat swings through the anchor, and make sure your swing circle stays clear through the full turn.
In a crowded anchorage, etiquette and geometry keep everyone safe. Anchor the same way your neighbours have, so if they are on all chain at short scope you should not drop right beside them at long scope on rope, because you will swing differently and clash. Give the boats already anchored their swing room, and if in doubt, ask a neighbour how much rode they have out. Drop where your circle will not overlap theirs even after a wind shift. The last boat in owns the responsibility to keep clear, so if it gets tight, you are the one who moves.
Sometimes a single anchor off the bow is not the answer. Two techniques cover the common cases.
Setting a stern anchor. A stern anchor stops the boat from swinging and holds it at a fixed heading. You might use one to keep the bow into a swell that is rolling into the anchorage, or to hold your position in a narrow spot where a full swing circle would put you aground or into another boat. To set one, anchor normally off the bow, then run a second anchor off the stern, either by backing down over it or by carrying it out in the dinghy and dropping it, then taking up on both so the boat sits pinned between them. The cost is that the boat can no longer weathervane into the wind, so if the wind gets up on the beam the load and the roll can both become uncomfortable. Use a stern anchor deliberately, not by default.
The Bahamian moor. In a reversing tidal current, a Bahamian moor sets two anchors off the bow in line with the current, one upstream and one downstream, both leading to the bow. The boat then pivots in a tight circle between them as the tide turns, without ever dragging, and without the wide swing a single anchor allows. It is the classic answer for a narrow tidal creek packed with boats. To rig it, set your main anchor ahead as usual, drop back on a lot of scope, set the second anchor astern of you, then haul back to the middle and take the second rode forward to the bow so both lead from the same point. It takes practice, but in the right spot nothing else keeps you as tidily in place.
Getting the anchor up is the reverse of setting it, and doing it smoothly saves your back and your windlass. Start the engine and motor slowly forward toward the anchor while a crew member hauls in the slack rode, so the boat does the work of moving up on the anchor rather than the windlass or your arms dragging the whole boat forward. Keep the bow pointed at the anchor and match the boat's speed to the rate the rode comes in.
When the rode is straight up and down, the boat's position directly over the anchor, snub it off and let the boat's momentum or a gentle nudge forward break the anchor out of the bottom. A well-dug anchor can hold hard, and trying to winch it straight out puts huge strain on the windlass, so let the hull's own weight do it. Once it breaks free, haul it up, rinse off the mud, and stow it. If the anchor is fouled on rock or an old chain, motoring in a slow circle to change the pull direction often trips it loose. For a really stuck anchor, a trip line rigged to the crown before you set is the insurance that lets you pull it out backward.
Hauling all chain by hand is brutal on anything but a small boat, which is why the windlass exists, and it needs to be treated well during retrieval. Never use the windlass to drag the boat up to the anchor, and never use it to break the anchor out. It is a hauling tool for the last of the rode, not a winch for the whole boat. The last piece of good anchoring is a system that watches the boat while you rest. An anchor watch means someone or something is confirming, continuously, that you have not moved off your set position.
The simplest tool is a drag alarm, and every boater should use one overnight. Set an anchor alarm on your chartplotter or on a phone app by marking your position when the anchor is set and entering a radius equal to your swing circle, your rode length plus boat length, plus a little margin. The alarm then sounds if the boat's GPS position leaves that circle. Set the radius carefully: too tight and it cries wolf every time you swing normally, too loose and you will be dragging toward the rocks before it wakes you. A good alarm radius is snug enough to catch real drag early but generous enough to allow your full normal swing.
Back up the electronics with human habits. Take a good set of bearings before dark so you have a mental picture of where you should be. If the wind pipes up in the night, get up and check your transits and your position relative to other boats rather than trusting the alarm alone. In a serious blow, a proper anchor watch means someone stays awake and checks regularly, because a dragging anchor found early is a minor nuisance and one found late is an emergency.
