You hire the surveyor directly, not the broker and not the seller, because independence is the entire point. The seller or the seller's captain usually operates the boat during the trial, especially on larger vessels. This is deliberate. If the seller has run the engines to temperature before you arrive, that is a small red flag worth noting, because a hard-starting or smoking diesel is easiest to catch on the first cold crank of the day. Ask, politely, that the engines be cold when you show up.
During the dockside phase the surveyor works through the boat systematically. Expect the following before departure. The surveyor checks the shore power connection and the electrical panel, confirms the batteries hold voltage and the charger is working, and looks at the wiring for corrosion, chafe, and amateur splices. Marine wiring done badly is a fire risk, and insurers read these findings closely.
The bilges get opened and inspected dry. A dry bilge is a good sign. Standing water, oil sheen, or salt crust points to a leak somewhere, whether a shaft seal, a hose, or a through-hull. You want open water, enough depth and room to run the boat to full throttle, and ideally a bit of chop to feel how the hull handles a sea. Flat calm is pretty but it hides how a boat behaves when it is working. Here is what to check on a sea trial, in the order it usually unfolds.
The single most important number of the day is the engine RPM at wide open throttle, and whether it matches the manufacturer's rated WOT range. Every diesel has a specified full-throttle RPM band, for example 2600 to 2800 RPM. When the boat is run flat out, warm, and clean, each engine should reach the top of, or very close to, that rated band. An engine that falls several hundred RPM short of its rated WOT is telling you something is wrong. The common causes are a fouled bottom, the wrong or damaged propeller, an overloaded boat, a tired engine losing compression, a clogged fuel filter, or a turbo problem. An engine that over-revs past its rated band, running light, usually means a slipping or damaged prop or gear.
While the engines are held at WOT for a sustained period, watch the temperature gauges. Coolant temperature should climb to the normal operating range and then hold steady. A gauge that keeps climbing under sustained load points to a cooling problem, a partially blocked heat exchanger, a failing raw-water pump impeller, or a scaled-up cooling system. Watch the oil pressure too. It should stay steady within spec, not sag as the engine heats up. On turbocharged engines the surveyor may also note exhaust gas temperature if instrumented. This WOT test, run for several minutes with all gauges observed, is the core of the mechanical trial. Do not let a nervous seller cut it short.
Run the boat through the full range of gear and throttle. Shift from neutral into forward and reverse at the dock and under way, feeling for clean engagement without clunking, delay, or grinding. A transmission that hesitates going into gear, or that slips under load, is an expensive finding. Bring the boat up onto plane if it is a planing hull, and note how long it takes and whether it holds plane at cruise RPM without straining.
Feel for vibration. A smooth drivetrain runs with only a low even hum. Vibration that comes on at a particular RPM, or that you feel through the wheel or the deck, points to a bent shaft, a damaged or fouled propeller, worn cutless bearings, or misaligned engine mounts. The surveyor may go below while under way to look at the shaft and coupling spinning, watching for wobble. Test the steering hard over in both directions at speed, checking that the boat responds promptly, tracks straight when centered, and that the helm has no excessive play or fluid leaks.
Do slow-speed maneuvers too, not just the high-speed run. Docking, backing down, holding station, and turning in a tight circle all reveal how the boat handles at the speeds you will actually use most. If twin engines, confirm the boat maneuvers correctly on each engine independently.
With the boat under way and the systems energized, work through the electronics. Confirm the chartplotter, radar, autopilot, VHF, depth sounder, and any other installed gear power up and function. Run the autopilot to see that it holds a course. Test the trim tabs, the windlass, the horn, the running lights, the wipers, and the electrical accessories. Electronics that do not work become negotiation items, and marine electronics are not cheap to replace.
Check the bilge again while running and after the run. A bilge that was dry at the dock but has water in it after the trial points to a leak that only shows under way, a shaft seal weeping under load or a hose joint that opens up with vibration. Wet core is a structural problem and a costly repair. Below the waterline the surveyor inspects the running gear. On a powerboat that is the propellers, shafts, struts, cutless bearings, and rudders. Propellers get checked for dings, bends, and pitting. Shafts get checked for straightness and for wear at the bearings, with the surveyor grabbing the prop and trying to move it to feel for play in the cutless bearing. On outdrives and outboards, the lower units, gimbal bearings, bellows, and anodes come under scrutiny. Sacrificial anodes, the zincs, get checked for how much they have wasted away, which tells you about the boat's galvanic protection and stray-current exposure.
On a sailboat the surveyor inspects the keel-to-hull joint for the telltale smile of a crack or movement, the rudder for play and water intrusion, and the through-hulls from outside. Any signs of a past grounding, a repaired keel, or a rudder that has taken on water get documented. They inspect the turbochargers, injectors, and the cooling system in detail, they read the engine's electronic data if it is a common-rail or electronically governed diesel, and they compare the running hours against the maintenance records and the general condition. An engine with low hours but heavy corrosion tells a different story than the hour meter alone.
The most cost-effective diagnostic in the whole process is oil analysis. The technician draws a sample of engine oil, and often gear oil and coolant, and sends it to a lab. The lab measures the concentration of wear metals, iron, copper, aluminum, chromium, lead, along with contaminants like coolant, fuel dilution, and water. High iron points to cylinder or valvetrain wear. Copper and lead point to bearing wear. Coolant in the oil points to a failing head gasket or a cracked component. A clean oil report is strong evidence of a healthy, well-maintained engine. A report full of wear metals is a warning that the engine may be near a major service or a rebuild, which reshapes the entire negotiation. Oil analysis costs very little relative to what it can save you, and the results usually come back within a few days.
Pull the maintenance records alongside the oil analysis.
