Electrical
- Battery bank load test: Test house bank, start bank, and genset batteries with a proper load tester, not just a voltmeter. Lifeline AGM batteries are common on boats this size and typically last 4 to 6 years in Florida. If any cell shows more than 0.5V deviation, that battery is done.
- Shore power cord and inlet inspection: Look for heat discoloration, pitting on pins, and cracking on the cord jacket. A bad shore power connection can cause a fire. SmartPlug is a worthwhile upgrade over the old twist-lock style. Have your marine electrician do a thermal scan of the main panel if you have not done one in the past year.
- Bilge pump test: Manually trigger each bilge pump and verify float switch operation. Check the high-water alarm. Replace any Rule or Johnson pump that chatters or fails to prime.
HVAC

Spring Season (March through May): Pre-Summer and Storm Prep Begins
The water warms fast starting in March. By April, marine growth shifts into overdrive. This is also when you should start thinking about hurricane season, which officially begins June 1 but can deliver named storms as early as May in recent years.
Hull and Bottom
- Haul-out for bottom paint: If your last bottom job is more than 12 to 18 months old, spring haul is the time. - Running gear alignment: Laser-check shaft alignment while the boat is blocked. A good yard with an Easy-Laser or Pruftechnik rig can verify alignment in under an hour per shaft. Misalignment eats cutlass bearings, packing glands, and transmission seals.
Safety Equipment
- Life raft service: Annual inspection is required by most manufacturers (Viking, Zodiac, Winslow). Send it out in March so you have it back before storm season. Service runs $400 to $800 depending on raft size and what needs replacing inside.
- EPIRB registration and battery: Verify your 406 MHz EPIRB registration is current with NOAA. Battery replacement is typically every 5 years on ACR and McMurdo units. New units with GPS run $400 to $600.

Summer Season (June through August): Storm Season Is Live

Electrical and Electronics

Post-Hurricane Check
- Full vessel inspection: Whether or not a named storm hit your area, tropical weather brings sustained wind, rain, and surge. Walk every inch of the boat. Check for chafe damage on dock lines, stanchion bending, canvas tearing, and water intrusion at hatches and ports.
- Insurance documentation: If there is any damage, photograph everything before touching it. File claims promptly. Know your hurricane deductible (typically 2% to 5% of hull value on Florida policies). Work with your yacht insurance provider to understand covered versus excluded damage.
Refit Planning
- Book yard time early: Fall is when you should be scheduling spring or winter refit work. Good yards in Fort Lauderdale (Lauderdale Marine Center, Bradford, Derecktor) book out 2 to 4 months. Year-Round Monthly Tasks
Regardless of season, these tasks should be on every month\'s list:
