How often should marine through-hulls and seacocks be serviced?

Bronze seacocks should be exercised (opened and closed fully) monthly to prevent them from seizing. Annual haul-out inspection is mandatory — the surveyor or yard should check every through-hull for corrosion, electrolysis damage and proper operation. Replace any seacock that is stiff, shows dezincification (pink discoloration on bronze), or cannot be closed by hand. Rubber-bodied Marelon valves need less maintenance but should still be inspected annually. Below-waterline hose clamps should be doubled and checked for corrosion every year.

For yachts under 50 feet, Raritan or Jabsco manual or electric marine heads with a holding tank are reliable and cost-effective ($800-$2,500 installed). For larger yachts, vacuum systems (Jets, Evac) save water, eliminate odor and allow smaller-diameter piping — but they are more complex and cost $3,000-$8,000 per head installed. Composting heads (Nature's Head, Airhead) are popular on cruising sailboats — no through-hulls, no holding tank — but are not practical for charter or guest-heavy use. Always factor in holding-tank size and pumpout access when choosing a system.
